Why Call a Poison Center?

Short answer: The poison experts are at the poison center!

Longer answer: The health care providers who work at our your local poison center are recognized experts in the prevention, recognition, and treatment of poisoning. The majority of the nurses and pharmacists who answer the emergency phones at poison centers are nationally certified as specialists in poison information by the American Association of Poison Control Centers. Most poison center directors are board-certified in clinical toxicology by the American Board of Applied Toxicology. Also, most poison center medical directors are board-certified in medical toxicology by the American College of Medical Toxicology. The majority of U.S. poison centers are certified as regional poison centers by the American Association of Poison Control Centers. With federal funding authorized by the Poison Control Center Enhancement and Awareness Act (Public Law 106-174), all poison centers will meet certification criteria within the next few years.
